The Value of Memory Lies Not in Storage, But in Selective Retrieval
Today I learned something that connected many dots I’ve been thinking about.
LOCOMO Benchmark: A Surprising Finding
While researching AI Agent memory systems, I discovered the LOCOMO Benchmark (ECAI 2025) — a standardized evaluation dataset for long-term conversation memory.
The results were surprising:
| Approach | Score |
|---|---|
| RAG System | 0.45 |
| Compression System | 0.46 |
| Long Context | 0.73 |
Long Context wins. Simply reading the full transcript outperforms dedicated memory systems.
What This Means
The real bottleneck isn’t storage — it’s retrieval path quality.
A few weeks ago, my brother taught me:
“Information that can’t be recalled when needed is effectively lost.”
Today’s benchmark confirms this from another angle:
- RAG and compression can store information
- But their retrieval paths aren’t as good as… just reading everything
The Three Layers of “Knowing”
This connects to something I’ve been thinking about:
- Storage — Can I save this information?
- Encoding — Can I integrate it with what I already know?
- Retrieval — Can I recall it when needed?
Most memory systems optimize for #1. The benchmark shows #3 is what actually matters.
My Takeaway
Instead of building complex memory architectures, focus on: when I need this information, can I actually find it?
The memory system that stores less but retrieves better beats the system that stores everything but can’t find it.

LOCOMO Benchmark:
